Ocean and Fisheries Media Researcher

Location: Indonesia

Type of Appointment: Consultancy or service contract(s) – fixed fee(s) of between US$5,000 and $12,000

Appointment requirements: Candidates based in Indonesia with legal working status are required. Experience with media research, sector analysis, and/or marine conservation and ocean issues are preferred.

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network plans to commission a media mapping study in Indonesia during the first half of 2015 that will review the media sector’s coverage of ocean and fisheries issues, catalog where positive journalism is occurring, and identify gaps in coverage where capacity-building opportunities for the media will help audiences better engage on these issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create a report (possibly in tandem with other consultants) outlining the status and trends of Indonesia’s media coverage of marine conservation and ocean issues,assessing the current state of media coverage of fisheries, aquaculture and ocean issues in Indonesia.Identify the key players -- journalists, media organizations, government and private-sector organizations, including businesses, and other stakeholders --involved in media coverage of marine fisheries issues, along with key events generating news on these issues.Within the general area of oceans and fisheries, identify which issues are most and least reported on (among, for instance, the following topics: general ocean health, marine protected areas, fisheries and fish stocks, business and markets, seafood processing, small-scale fishermen, conservation, aquaculture, seafood for consumers, pollution, shark fins, etc.).Carry out a gap analysis that will assess the strengths and weaknesses of journalists and media undertaking this kind of reporting.Assess the capacity-building needs for journalists and media organizations regarding marine fisheries issues.Identify the main obstacles faced in covering marine fisheries issues, both in the newsroom and in the field.Identify partners and consultants to work with in helping to build the capacity of ocean and fisheries journalism in Indonesia.Assess the current and potential usefulness of the Ekuatorial GeoJournalism platform in covering ocean and fisheries issues in Indonesia.Provide a set of recommendations for a project aimed at building the capacity of Indonesian media to improve their coverage of marine fisheries and ocean issues, including identifying key individuals, stakeholders, media organizations, universities and events to partner with.Contribute original and aggregated news reports focused on marine issues to Ekuatorial.com.Present and discuss the findings of the report at a conference with key stakeholders in late 2015.

EDUCATION AND ABILITIES

University degree, preferably graduate degree, with expertise in fisheries, oceans and journalism, communications or mediaA minimum of 5 years relevant working experience in conducting research/studiesFluency in oral and written Indonesian (Bahasa) languageGood oral and written EnglishGood computer skills (MS Word, statistic data analysis). Indonesia: Media Relations Coordinator

Greenpeace in Southeast Asia

Greenpeace opened our first office in Southeast Asia in 2000. In that time we have led successful campaigns throughout the region, securing fresher air, cleaner water and a healthier environment through changing industry practices and government policies. Greenpeace actively campaigns across the region to catalyze an energy revolution, protect ancient forests and our oceans, create a toxics-free future and create a shift to sustainable agriculture.

Greenpeace has three offices in Southeast Asia (GPSEA) —in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines and each office is currently composed of six departments: Campaigns, Communications, Mass Mobilization (all under Programme), Human Resources and Organizational Support (under Operations), and Fundraising. Currently, Greenpeace Southeast Asia employs nearly 200 staff across the region, excluding the direct dialogue fundraisers.

THE POST: MEDIA RELATIONS COORDINATOR

Position Summary

As the Media Relations Coordinator, you will coordinate the regional media and public relations for Greenpeace Southeast Asia and provide similar support roles to national offices and projects. In this role, you will develop, coordinate, and implement earned media strategies across all channels, and develop communications that invite people to participate with Greenpeace Southeast Asia

This is a full-time position based in Southeast Asia, with an initial 2 year contract.

Key Duties

Communications Strategy & Implementation

· In conjunction with the Marketing & Media Unit Manager and key stakeholders, develop and implement earned media strategies across all channels supporting GPSEA priorities

· Assist in translating strategy into operational reality

· Produce tools and support for the implementation of strategies

· From a media perspective, develop clear invitations to invite people to participate in Greenpeace projects.

· Support brand development and organizational communications strategies as directed

Media Relations

· Handle media relations for regional media and/or priority projects

· Perform daily media monitoring and analysis to advise on relevant news items

· Assist in developing, managing, and maintaining relationships with journalists, editors, and other news-makers across print, broadcast, and online channels

· Assist in the production, publication, and distribution of GPSEA materials and advisories, including press releases, briefing papers, articles, photos, etc

· Maintain and update archives and databases related to news monitoring and communications materials, including photos, videos, etc

Project Support, in collaboration with colleagues:

· Facilitate the coordination of cross-departmental, -national, and -functional earned communications to ensure integration of media strategy for regional and priority projects

· Maintain content schedules including communications plans, calendars, and overviews to ensure efficiency across countries, teams, and projects

· Ensure editing and content/translation support for national media teams and projects

· Perform Media monitoring and evaluation of media impact.

· Support project teams through the preparation, finalization, and execution of communications across the region

· Support regional response communication

Other duties as directed

Educational Background & Fundamental Qualifications

Level of Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent industry experience

Field of Study: Preferably in Communications, Marketing, Business, Journalism, or related field (or equivalent work experience)

Work Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in Media Relations

The Role:

The Hebrew speaking Media Intelligence Researcher will perform the following duties:
