Internews’ Earth

Journalism Network
plans to commission a media mapping

study in Indonesia during the first half of 2015 that will

review the media sector’s coverage of ocean and fisheries

issues, catalog where positive journalism is occurring, and

identify gaps in coverage where capacity-building opportunities

for the media will help audiences better engage on these

issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create a report (possibly in tandem with other

consultants) outlining the status and trends of Indonesia’s

media coverage of marine conservation and ocean

    issues,
assessing the current state of media coverage

of fisheries, aquaculture and ocean issues in Indonesia.

  • Identify the key players — journalists, media

    organizations, government and private-sector organizations,

including businesses, and other stakeholders –involved in

media coverage of marine fisheries issues, along with key

events generating news on these issues.

  • Within the general area of oceans and fisheries,

identify which issues are most and least reported on (among,

for instance, the following topics: general ocean health,

marine protected areas, fisheries and fish stocks, business

and markets, seafood processing, small-scale fishermen,

conservation, aquaculture, seafood for consumers, pollution,

    shark fins, etc.).

  • Carry out a gap analysis that will assess the

strengths and weaknesses of journalists and media undertaking

    this kind of reporting.

  • Assess the capacity-building needs for journalists

and media organizations regarding marine fisheries

    issues.

  • Identify the main obstacles faced in covering marine

fisheries issues, both in the newsroom and in the

    field.

  • Identify partners and consultants to work with in

helping to build the capacity of ocean and fisheries

    journalism in Indonesia.

  • Assess the current and potential usefulness of the
    Ekuatorial

GeoJournalism platform in covering ocean and fisheries issues

    in Indonesia.

  • Provide a set of recommendations for a project aimed

at building the capacity of Indonesian media to improve their

coverage of marine fisheries and ocean issues, including

    identifying key individuals, stakeholders, media

organizations, universities and events to partner

    with.

  • Contribute original and aggregated news reports

focused on marine issues to Ekuatorial.com.

  • Present and discuss the findings of the report at a

conference with key stakeholders in late 2015.
