EDF’s Oceans Program works to improve the health of the oceans by getting in place innovative and durable solutions to today’s toughest fishery management challenges. EDF is expanding its work in Asia and is looking for a candidate interested in helping to build our program.
OVERALL FUNCTION
Reporting to the Vice President of EDF’s Oceans Program, the Associate Vice President, Asia Oceans Program (Asia Oceans AVP) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for EDF Oceans work in Asia.
The Asia Oceans AVP is strategic and aggressive in advancing our vision in the region to produce more fish in the water, more food on the plate and more profitable fishing communities. She/he uses her/his cultural expertise and technical fluency to identify and recognize major opportunities to pursue, as well as critical pitfalls to avoid. The Asia Oceans VP will work to build EDF’s profile in the region as both a leader in the field and a desirable partner to governments, industry, and other key stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
With an ownership mentality, lead the overall effort to advance the vision of EDF’s Oceans Program in the Asia region.
Thoroughly understand EDF’s Oceans Program – its mission and core values, culture, and approach – and be the Oceans Program’s chief representative in the region.
Promote an organizational culture and structure that fosters cooperation, communication, collaboration, teamwork, transparency, and trust.
Manage a team of highly professional country directors who are responsible for projects in China, Japan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, and the Pacific Island nations that are parties to the Nauru Agreement.
Nurture and grow a strong and committed professional staff and build relationships of trust and cooperation both within and outside the organization .
Taking regional geopolitics, and cultural and economic dynamics into account, identifies major opportunities to advance the vision of the Oceans Program in the region through strategic communications, partnerships, financing efforts, capacity-building, and stakeholder engagement.
Ensure projects have and manage against ambitious and achievable objectives that deliver meaningful real-world results.
Collaborate with EDF communications staff to develop plans to meet the regions communications needs.
Partner with the Oceans Program Senior Vice President and Vice President to engage EDF trustees and donors and to raise funds to advance our mission in Asia.
Coordinate with EDF’s Vice President for Asia to align efforts across EDF’s climate, oceans, and other programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree with at least 10 years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading a performance- and outcomes-based team
A strong understanding of the cultures, national and regional politics, social dynamics, and economic issues in Asia
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a strategic vision, promoting innovation and cultivating entrepreneurship
Experience managing large teams, preferably in multiple countries
Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to succeed in a multi-cultural context
A thoughtful, persuasive negotiator; open and responsive to the ideas of others; able to prioritize and balance competing interests, and build consensus from disparate viewpoints and to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Fluency in Japanese or Chinese preferred, fluency in English required
