NORTH SUMATRA – SENIOR LANDSCAPE PROGRAM MANAGER
Job Description
Job Summary:
The North Sumatra Senior Landscapes Manager requires to work closely with external partners at local, provincial and national levels, and will further be responsible for establishing constructive relationships with government, other NGOs and the private sector to support project alignment with government development objectives. This position will be based in Medan, North Sumatra with frequent travel to project sites in North Sumatra and periodic travel to CI offices in Jakarta. S/he will manage a small team of field staff to support project implementation and will coordinate closely with other CI staff in Medan, Jakarta, and other relevant CI Offices as well as CI’s Regional Office in Singapore.
In Coordination with Terrestrial Operations Manager, this position will oversee operations, finance, and administrative functions within his /her areas and to ensure compliance with donors and organization’s policies and procedures in term of program implementation.
Responsibilities:
1. Project Development and Implementation
• Provide technical, management and leadership primarily to support the SLP/SALP programs to ensure that program/project results meets SLP/SALP and CI-I donor quality standards and expectations and that these projects are progressing on schedule;
• Ensure that program activities are aligned with SLP/SALP goals and objectives where a fundamental element of these interventions is to promote stakeholder ownership, ‘buy-in’ and high quality outcomes that are replicable and can be scaled up;
• Ensure that field staff and operations are on-line if not ahead of SLP/SALP program goals and objectives with proposed work-plan activities drafted and submitted for review;
• Develop and refine climate change adaptation strategies based on development of scientific baselines, creation of policy enabling conditions with a specific focus on SLP/SALP;
• Identify and develop strategic opportunities to support program goals and objectives as they emerge through the formulation of public-private sector partnerships or funding and proposal development opportunities; and
• Ensure field staff are well supported, with training and capacity needs readily identified with a focus on on-the-job training via mentoring, coaching and ‘frank and fearless feedback’ as long as it is constructive.
2. Project Reporting and Communications
• Ensure that monthly, bi-annual reports are submitted on time for review;
• Ensure M&E systems are in place, will aid in the collection of reliable data and information;
• Ensure that the SLP/SALP field teams are submitting high quality reports, responsive to requests for success stories, testimonials and other materials required by program needs;
• Work with CI-Indonesia personnel to identify appropriate materials and mechanisms to support improved reporting and communications;
• Ensure that field expenses are allowable and in line with budget proposals;
• Ensure that good office processes and protocols are in place in line with CI/donor rules and regulations;
3. Capacity Building and Partnerships
• Identify opportunities to develop partner capacity (whether private or public sector) so that they are unable to better understand the basis for SLP/SALP and apply this within their business models;
• Together with other CI-Indonesia personnel ensure that public private partnership opportunities are identified, well researched, developed and then maintained so that they are strategically aligned with SLP/SALP and CI-Indonesia more broadly. This will of course be done with the guidance and direction of the SLP COP with direction provided where appropriate by the CI-Indonesia Executive Director;
• Promote experience-based learning processes and policy feedback loops/mechanisms with the CI-I SMT, SLP/SALP field programs, headquarters, and partner government, private sector, and civil society organizations;
• Support on-going adjustments/initiatives to CI-I and HQ-based strategic planning and related new terrestrial programs and climate change initiatives with the CI-I SMT and SLP/SALP, Sumatra and Papua Program Managers, and CI HQ Climate Change Initiative, CELB, and Moore Center teams in each field program, as opportunities arise.
4. Science and Engagement
• The North Sumatra Sr. Landscape Program Manager will be responsible for ensuring that SALP/SLP field personnel, implementing partners/grantees, private sector partners as well as external stakeholders are aware of and exposed to the science that CI-Indonesia is promoting through its various programs;
• Identify opportunities to promote the development of science within both programs potentially through collaboration with local academic counterparts, internships, partnerships with other institutions.
How to Apply
Minimum Required Qualifications:
• A Degree in social science, management, natural resource management-related science with a minimum 5+ years of experience;
• Extensive management and leadership experience;
• Experience in coordinating and managing program support from International and National donor agencies, foundations and private sources;
• Ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations with a wide range of people in both the public and private sectors, including business, government, non-governmental organizations, donor organizations, local communities, consultants and volunteers;
• Knowledge and background in the customs and government organizations of Indonesia;
• Proven track record in writing/editing successful conservation-focused strategy documents, funding proposals, progress reports and relevant materials;
• Willingness to travel and work long hours, including work in arduous field conditions, often to remote areas and work weekends and after hours as needed;
• Proven record of success as part of interdisciplinary project teams;
• Good communication skills and develop network;
• Fluent in English (Speaking, Reading and Writing);
• Computer literate; humorist, hardworking, easygoing.
