Position Summary:


About Sustainable Finance Initiative. In 2011 Rainforest Alliance launched, in collaboration with Rabobank and Citigroup, a Sustainable Finance Initiative. It works at both demand and supply ends of financial services, to improve farmer literacy and business organization and to facilitate development of financial products that can serve smallholder farmers. The initiative has developed and piloted business and financial management training and developed relationships with social finance institutions, as well as mainstream financial services institutions. The initiative has worked to date in Latin America and Africa and the project provides an opportunity to expand to Asia.


About the project Scaled sustainability through brand led collaboration. The project will take to scale in Indonesia a sustainability system that has been developed and tested by the world’s largest coffee brand, in collaboration with a leading NGO in sustainable agriculture. The Nescafé Better Farming Practices (NBFP) are designed to move farmers through the 4C Association’s baseline sustainability verification and on to further improvements in productivity, quality and sustainability. The project will incorporate and generate learning for the industry on key drivers of improvements in: farmer livelihoods; farm adaptation to climate variability; farmers’ business skills and access to financial services.


Consultant or Firm Scope of Work Summary.
At the end of the implementation we expect 1,000 farmers will have been trained in business skills and financial literacy, of which 700 will be implementing bookkeeping and 300 will have achieved improved access to finance.


Deliverables | Producers and local groups strengthen their business management:
•Trainers have successfully integrated basic business and financial management into their training courses;
•1,000 farmers are applying basic tools to calculate the cost of implementing NBFP;
•Costs and benefits of applying the NBFP sustainability practices are calculated;
•Pilot study has been undertaken on farmer access to finance;
•Two financial services organizations are in active dialogue with RA on potential lending.


Qualifications:


It is expected that the Consultant or Firm will have demonstrable experience in capacity building and training of adults in agriculture, farm management, basic finance, business management, or related fields; experience within NGOs and in tropical countries. Specifically:


•First-hand knowledge of the concepts of sustainable agriculture; knowledge of the coffee sector preferred;
•Understanding of business and value chains and experience in working with producer organizations and/or factories as well as farmers;
•Familiarity with smallholder finance and credit issues;
•Portfolio of available financial literacy training curricula is a plus;
•Strong verbal and written communication skills in Bahasa language required and English;
•Ability to interact culturally, linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals required;
•Strong organizational and logistical skills to manage training agendas and related travel in a time sensitive manner required;
•Knowledge of and commitment to environmental and socio-economic issues and sustainability practices; and
•Ability and willingness to travel nationally as needed for consultancy
